Leadership place mark
I have worked for a number of companies large and small. Many have exceptional leaders and some that did not. The surprising aspect of this is that even with great leaders, very good leadership development programs and CEO’s and owners that strongly support good leadership, leadership doesn’t work.
Leadership doesn’t work because employees only see leadership through the eyes of their immediate experiences. If their VP, Director, Manager, Supervisor or, Lead doesn’t represent good leadership all of leadership fails. Take the newly appointed VP up hearing they had been promoted walked through the halls, chest out, exhorting they were now a VP. This leader immediately lost the respect of employees. Then there is the leader who dominates and controls meetings. I was in a meeting when this type of leader was told “you really think you are special don’t you?”. The leaders responded in a confident and positive voice “Absolutely, what I have to say is important.” This unawareness by leaders contrast what leadership discipline is about, yet is pervasive. Employees are like elephants. They don’t forget.
